Apple TV is usually a smooth performer, so when the picture starts stalling it is easy to assume something serious has gone wrong. In practice, most buffering on an Apple TV traces back to the home network, a device that has been running for weeks without a restart, or an app that needs an update.

This guide is specific to Apple TV and tvOS. Work through the checks in order and play a channel in IBO Player Pro after each one, so you can tell which step solved it.

Spot the Pattern First

Before changing anything, note a few details. They point you toward the right fix and save time if you end up contacting support.

  • Is it every channel and movie, or only certain ones?
  • Do other apps on the Apple TV stall too, or only the player?
  • Does an iPhone or laptop on the same network stream smoothly at the same moment?
  • Does it happen at particular times of day?

Stalling in every app suggests the network or the Apple TV itself. Trouble limited to a few channels is worth reporting with the channel names and times.

Check 1: Restart the Apple TV

  1. Open Settings and go to System.
  2. Choose Restart and wait for the home screen to return.
  3. If the menus are frozen, unplug the power cable, wait a short while and plug it back in.
  4. Open IBO Player Pro and test a channel.

Apple TV tends to sleep rather than switch off, so it can go a long time without a real restart. A fresh start clears its memory and reconnects it to the network.

Check 2: Look at the Network Screen

Go to Settings > Network. Here you can see whether the Apple TV is on Wi-Fi or Ethernet and, on Wi-Fi, an indication of signal strength. A weak signal is a strong hint that placement is the problem.

If your home has more than one network name, such as separate names for two bands, make sure the Apple TV joined the one you intended. Some households find one band reaches the TV better than the other.

Check 3: Restart the Router

Switch the router off at the power outlet, give it a short break, then switch it on again. Wait until all the lights settle before testing. If a separate modem supplies your internet, power that up first and the router second.

Check 4: Improve the Connection to the TV

Use Ethernet on Models That Have It

Some Apple TV models include an Ethernet port. If yours does and a cable can reach the router, wiring it in removes wireless interference entirely. Our comparison of Ethernet and Wi-Fi for streaming explains when the cable is worth the effort.

Give the Wi-Fi a Better Path

An Apple TV tucked inside a closed cabinet or directly behind a large TV can receive a weaker signal. Moving it into the open, or moving the router to a better position, often helps. See our tips on router placement for streaming for ideas.

Check 5: Refresh the App

  1. Double-press the TV or home button on the remote to open the app switcher.
  2. Swipe up on IBO Player Pro to close it.
  3. Open the App Store and install any available update for the app.
  4. Relaunch IBO Player Pro and try again.

If problems continue, deleting the app and installing it again from the App Store gives you a clean copy. Keep your subscription email ready, because you will add your profile again with ADD USER.

Check 6: Update tvOS

Open Settings > System > Software Updates and install anything available. Turning on automatic updates in the same menu keeps the Apple TV current without you having to remember.

Check 7: Consider Everything Else on Your Network

Your Apple TV shares the home connection with every phone, laptop, console and smart device in the house. Big downloads, game updates and video calls can all compete with it. Try a test while other activity is quiet; if the stalls disappear, the connection is simply busy at certain times.

Troubleshooting Persistent Freezing

The Picture Freezes but Sound Continues

Close and reopen the app, then check Settings > Video and Audio to make sure the output format suits your television. Trying a different HDMI port or cable rules out a loose connection.

Only One Channel Stalls

If other channels play normally, write down the channel name and when it happens, then reach out through our contact page.

Everything Stalls on Every Device

Frequently Asked Questions

Does restarting from Settings do the same as unplugging?

Both give the Apple TV a fresh start. Unplugging is useful when the menus are not responding.

Should I reset my Apple TV?

A reset erases your apps and settings, so try every step in this guide first and contact support before going that far.

Will a newer Apple TV fix buffering?

Not if the cause is your network. Rule out the connection and the app before thinking about hardware.

Where do I start if I have not set up the app yet?

Follow our Apple TV setup guide first, then return here if playback is not smooth.

Smooth Playback on the Big Screen

Most Apple TV stalls clear up with a restart, a better connection and current software. For setup steps on other devices, visit the installation page.
