An Android TV box turns almost any television with an HDMI input into a streaming setup. Because it runs Android and connects to Google Play, installing a player app works much like it does on a phone, just with a remote control instead of a touchscreen.
This walkthrough starts with connecting the hardware and finishes with your first channel on screen. Along the way it covers the choices that matter most on a box: how it connects to your network, which app to install and how to make typing with a remote less painful.
Step 1: Connect the Box
Good physical setup prevents many of the problems people later blame on the app.
- Plug the box into a free HDMI port on the TV and note which input number it uses.
- Connect the power adapter supplied with the box to a wall outlet.
- If your box has an Ethernet port and the router is nearby, connect a network cable; otherwise you will join Wi-Fi in the next step.
- Switch the TV to the matching HDMI input and turn the box on.
Leave some space around the box rather than tucking it into a closed cabinet. Streaming devices produce heat, and good airflow helps them run consistently.
Step 2: Finish the Android Setup
- Follow the on-screen setup to pick your language and join your Wi-Fi network if you are not using a cable.
- Sign in with your Google account so the Play Store is available.
- Open Settings and check for a system update; install it and let the box restart.
- Open the Play Store and update any apps that came preinstalled.
Step 3: Install IBO Player Pro or TiviMate
Our Android instructions name IBO Player Pro as the recommended player, with TiviMate IPTV Player as an alternative. Both are found through Google Play.
- Open the Play Store from the home screen.
- Use the search icon and enter the name of the app you chose.
- Select the result and press Install.
- Press Open, or find the new app in your app row afterward.
Going with TiviMate? Its sign-in screens differ a little, so follow our dedicated TiviMate setup guide for that part.
Step 4: Log In with Your Subscription
Select the Xtream Codes login option in the app, then fill in the three details from your purchase email: Username, Password and Server URL. Move slowly through the on-screen keyboard and check every character before you confirm. The first load can take a moment while the app gathers your channels, movies and series.
Easier Typing on a TV Box
Entering a long server address with arrow keys is tedious. Many Android boxes accept a basic USB or wireless keyboard, which makes this step far quicker. If your box came with a remote that has a voice button, dictation works for some fields, but always review the result because addresses rarely come out exactly right by voice.
Step 5: Check Picture and Sound Settings
Android boxes often guess the display settings on first boot, and the guess is not always right. A quick look at the box settings helps the picture match your television.
- Open Settings and look for Display, Display & Sound or Screen, depending on the model.
- Check the resolution setting and choose the option that matches what your TV supports.
- If the edges of the picture are cut off, look for a screen position or zoom option and adjust it until the full image is visible.
- Under the sound options, confirm audio is going to the TV or to your soundbar, whichever you actually use.
Avoid changing options you do not recognize. If the picture goes blank after a change, wait a few seconds, since many boxes revert automatically when you do not confirm the new setting.
Setup Tips for Smoother Playback
- Prefer a wired Ethernet connection when your box and router allow it.
- Keep the box away from metal shelving and directly behind the TV, which can weaken Wi-Fi.
- Uninstall preloaded apps you will never use, where the box allows it, to keep storage free.
- Restart the box now and then, especially after updates.
- Check that the TV input is set to the box and not to a soundbar pass-through you do not use.
Troubleshooting Android TV Box Setup
Google Play Is Missing
Some boxes ship without Google Play or with a different app store. Our setup steps rely on Google Play, so if your box does not have it, contact our support team before installing anything from another source.
The Picture Pauses or Spins
Buffering on a box usually comes down to the network, storage or background apps. Work through our Android TV box buffering fixes in order.
The Box Says Storage Is Almost Full
Budget boxes often come with limited space. Our guide to freeing up storage on an Android TV box shows what is safe to remove.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a Google account on the box?
Yes. The Play Store requires a Google account, and that is where our recommended apps are installed from.
Is a wired connection better than Wi-Fi?
A cable is generally more consistent because it avoids wireless interference, but a strong Wi-Fi signal works well for many homes.
Which app should I start with?
IBO Player Pro is our recommended choice for Android. TiviMate IPTV Player is also listed in our setup guide if you prefer it.
Can I move the box to another TV later?
Yes. Unplug it, connect it to the other TV and your installed app and login should still be there.
