Audio that runs slightly ahead of or behind the picture is one of those problems that is hard to ignore once you notice it. Every conversation looks like a badly dubbed movie. Missing sound is even more obvious. Both can come from the channel, the app, the device or the audio equipment between your device and your ears.

This guide walks through the checks that apply to Android TV boxes, Apple TV, phones, tablets and Windows PCs, starting with the fastest ones.

Find Out Where the Delay Lives

  • Does the delay happen on every channel, or only one?
  • Does it also happen in other apps on the same device?
  • Does it disappear when you use the TV speakers instead of a soundbar or headphones?
  • Did it start after you connected new audio equipment or changed a setting?

If only one channel is off, the issue is probably with that stream. If every app is off, look at your audio equipment and device settings.

Why Sound and Picture Drift Apart

Sound and video travel together in a stream, but they are processed separately once they reach your home. The streaming device decodes the picture and sends it to the TV, which may apply its own picture processing. Audio may go through the TV, then to a soundbar or receiver, or over Bluetooth to headphones. Each step takes a little time, and when one path takes longer than the other, the two fall out of step.

That is why the same stream can look perfectly synced on one setup and slightly off on another. It also explains why the fix is often in the audio equipment rather than the app.

Use a Familiar Test

To judge sync accurately, watch someone speaking directly to the camera, such as a news presenter, and focus on sounds where the lips close, like the letters P and B. Test the same moment before and after each change so you can tell whether it helped.

Fix 1: Change Channel and Come Back

Switching to another channel and back forces the player to restart the stream, which often realigns sound and picture. It is the quickest test and costs nothing.

Fix 2: Restart the App and Device

  1. Close the player app completely.
  2. Restart the device you are watching on.
  3. Reopen the app and test the same channel.

Fix 3: Test Without Extra Audio Equipment

Soundbars, receivers and wireless headphones all process audio, and that processing can add a small delay. Switch temporarily to the TV speakers or the device’s own speakers. If the delay disappears, the external equipment is the source.

Soundbars and Receivers

Many soundbars and receivers include a setting often called AV sync, lip sync or audio delay. Check the manual for your model and adjust it in small steps while watching someone speak on screen.

Bluetooth Headphones and Speakers

Wireless audio adds some delay by nature, and the amount varies by device. Disconnect and reconnect the headphones, keep them close to the device, and try a wired option to compare.

Fix 4: Review Device Audio Settings

  • Android TV box: some boxes let you choose an audio output format; if yours offers an automatic or standard option, try it.
  • Apple TV: open Settings > Video and Audio and review the audio output and format options.
  • Windows PC: click the speaker icon on the taskbar and check that the right output device is selected.
  • Phones and tablets: disconnect Bluetooth devices you are not using so sound plays through the intended one.

Change one setting at a time and note what it was, so you can switch back if it makes no difference.

Fix 5: Update the App and Device

Audio handling sometimes improves in app and system updates. Check for both, restart, and test again. If nothing changes, a fresh reinstall of the app rules out a damaged installation.

When There Is No Sound at All

  1. Check the TV, soundbar and device volume, and make sure nothing is muted.
  2. Confirm the correct audio output is selected on the device.
  3. Try another channel to see if sound returns.
  4. Unplug and reconnect the HDMI or audio cable.
  5. Restart the device and the soundbar or receiver.

On a laptop connected to a TV, Windows may still send audio to the laptop speakers; our laptop guide explains how to switch it.

Troubleshooting Persistent Sync Problems

Only One Channel Is Out of Sync

Note the channel and time, then let our team know via the contact page.

Sync Drifts Over Time

If sound starts aligned and slowly drifts, restarting the stream usually resets it. Mention the pattern when you contact support.

Every App Is Out of Sync

Focus on the audio equipment and device settings, since the player app is not the common factor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is sound delayed only with my headphones?

Wireless headphones add their own delay. Try a wired pair or reconnect the Bluetooth link.

Can a soundbar cause audio delay?

Yes. Audio processing can add a slight lag; many models offer an AV sync adjustment.

Is audio delay a problem with my subscription?

Usually not. Delay across all apps points to equipment or settings. Delay on one channel is worth reporting.

Can TV picture modes affect sync?

Some TV picture processing adds a small delay to the image. If your TV has a mode with less processing, compare it to see whether sync improves.

Sound and Picture Together Again

Most sync issues are solved by restarting the stream or adjusting audio equipment. For other picture problems, see our black screen guide.
