Pressing play and getting nothing but a black screen is frustrating, mostly because it gives no hint about what went wrong. The good news is that the possible causes form a short list, and a few quick tests usually reveal which one you are dealing with.
This guide applies to Android TV boxes, Apple TV, phones, tablets and Windows PCs running a player app. Work from the top down and you will rarely need to go all the way to the end.
First, Describe the Black Screen
Black screens come in a few different forms, and each points somewhere different:
- The whole TV is black, including menus: the problem is the TV, the cable or the device output.
- Menus show, but a channel stays black with no sound: the stream is not starting.
- A channel is black but you hear audio: the video part of the stream or the display path is the issue.
- Only one channel is black while others play: that channel needs attention.
Fix 1: Check the TV and Input
- Press the Input or Source button on the TV remote and pick the HDMI input your device is connected to.
- Press the Home button on your streaming device remote; if its menu appears, the TV connection is fine.
- If nothing appears, check that the device is powered and its light is on.
Fix 2: Reseat or Swap the HDMI Cable
Unplug the HDMI cable at both ends and plug it back in firmly. If the picture is still missing, try another HDMI port on the TV or a different cable you know works. Loose or damaged cables can cause a black picture that comes and goes.
Fix 3: Try a Different Channel
If the app menus are visible, open a few different channels from different categories. When most of them play and one does not, the problem is limited to that channel rather than your setup. Note its name and the time, as that is exactly what our support team needs.
Fix 4: Restart the App and Device
- Close the player app fully from the recent apps list or app switcher.
- Restart the device: unplug an Android box briefly, use Settings > System > Restart on Apple TV, or restart your phone, tablet or PC normally.
- Open the app and try the channel again.
Fix 5: Check the Network
A stream that never starts can mean the connection dropped. Open another streaming app or a website to confirm the device is online. If several devices are struggling, restart your router and modem in the right order.
Fix 6: Update or Reinstall the Player
An outdated app can have trouble playing streams after a system update. Check your app store for an update. If the black screen affects every channel even after updating, reinstall the app and sign in again.
Fix 7: Review Display Settings
If the problem started after you changed resolution or display settings, set them back. On Apple TV, look under Settings > Video and Audio; on an Android box, look for Display settings. A format your TV does not support can produce a blank picture.
When You Hear Sound but See Nothing
Sound with a black picture usually means the stream is arriving but the video is not displaying. Try a different channel to see whether it is specific; restart the app; and if you recently changed display settings, revert them. On a PC, updating the graphics driver through Windows Update can help.
Black Screen Right After Setup
If you have just installed the app and nothing plays from the very first try, the cause is more often the setup than the channels. Check that the login completed and that the channel list actually loaded. On Apple devices, remember to select the Live TV icon after saving your profile so the streams sync. On Android, give the first import time to finish before opening a channel.
Our device guides, such as the Android TV box setup, describe each step so you can confirm nothing was skipped.
Habits That Prevent Black Screens
- Leave HDMI cables where they are rather than moving them between devices often.
- Avoid changing display formats unless you know your TV supports the new one.
- Keep the player app updated so it handles new system versions well.
- Restart your streaming device from time to time instead of leaving it on standby for weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does one channel show black while others work?
The issue is likely with that channel rather than your equipment. Let our support team know which channel and when.
Can an HDMI cable really cause this?
Yes. A loose or failing cable can cut the picture entirely or make it flicker in and out.
Should I factory reset my device?
No, not for a black screen. Work through the steps here and contact support before considering anything that drastic.
The menus show but every channel is black. What now?
Check that the device is online, restart the app and device, then update or reinstall the player before contacting support.
Back to a Picture
Most black screens come down to an input, a cable or an app that needs a restart. If none of these steps help, our pre-support checklist will help you gather the details we need.
